Some Changes on the First Floor

Where did the summer go? I want it back!

Just a heads up that you will notice a few more changes on the 1st floor, perhaps starting as soon as tomorrow:

1.We have hired PSI to move shelving units in the Reference, Gov Pubs and Scores areas. Some of the metal shelving will be retained for later use, some will be removed from the building. The counter-high wooden shelving in the former Scores area will be repurposed behind the current Ref/Information Desk and in the re-shelving area in front of bound Periodicals.

2.The Gov Pubs microfiche cabinets will be moved to the back of the room (outside the rm 118 wall). Approximately 4 or 5 cabinets will continue to hold government publications microfiche. Eventually the remaining empty cabinets will go to Norlin Library.

3.These moves will create the Learning Commons sandbox area. Creating a Tech Help Desk outside of the Computer Commons has been discussed for several months and now we are ready to establish this in the sandbox area. The Tech Help Desk will likely be called the Computer Assistance Desk. Also, collaborative study areas will be encouraged as one of the elements of the sandbox. We are starting low-key and experimental with the sandbox, so we will be relocating some our existing furniture into the sandbox area for the purpose of group study.

4.Quotes on the Self Checkout stations have just been received, so a decision will be forthcoming.

5.By Monday morning, there will be Observation Journals at each of the public desks on the 1st floor. You are encouraged to write down your observations of customer behavior, exchanges, and comments. Your observations are valuable information as we gather data on how students, faculty, staff, and public patrons use the building, our resources, and our services. Your observations may come from questions that you get at the Desks, from watching "lost" patrons' traffic patterns, from over-hearing exchanges between students, from noticing how users are using or not using signage, reactions to the Learning Commons sandbox, reactions to the Computer Assistance Desk, etc.

If you were able to participate in Erika Rogers' workshops on gathering data ...you get the idea-using words, pictures, diagrams are all ways of recording information in the journal. Even if you weren't able to attend Erika's workshop, this is easy and there is no wrong way to record your observations as long as you are professional and remember that the journals may have a wide-readership (civil language, no individual customer names, and if you are a rotten artist like me, maybe add a few words to explain any pictures you draw). Any staff person may record observations in the journals not just folks working at the Desks.

->If you have any questions about anything mentioned in this email, please contact Meg or myself off the list. We will respond to you individually, copy to the whole list, or share through News @ 1100 as appropriate.

More details on these and other initiatives will be coming soon. If you made it this far in reading this email, you deserve an ice cream and to enjoy this last day of our summer...come get a treat from the Tech Services freezer after about 10am Friday.

Many thanks to all of you for making these changes possible and moving the Library forward in our strategic plan -- talk about a great team effort-- WooHoo!!

Proposed ERI Meeting Changes

Cindy, I think the meeting time changes sound good. They are after SLT, so you can update us on what is going on. Thanks for asking.

Signage Project
Catherine is launching a Signage Project that will involve examining and updating the signs that we have posted throughout the building. Placement, wording, effectiveness, attractiveness, and other factors will be examined. For example, the many "Keep Your Personal Belongings..." signs on pink, orange, and green pieces of paper taped on each desk and carrel will be replaced with more effective signs. Therefore, if you notice that these pieces of paper are being taken off of the furniture, know that you don't need to replace them. This project will be discussed more in Shared Leadership and input will be solicited...so stay tuned! Note: The Learning Spaces task force has also discussed digital signage, but that is likely to be a longer term solution. Cindy H.

Proposed Date Changes for ERI Brown Bag and ERI Services meetings -- I need your input on a proposed change. I suggest that we have our ERI Services meetings on the 1st Thursday of the month from 2pm-3pm and move our ERI Brown Bag lunches to the 3rd Thursday of the month from Noon-1pm. Do either of those suggested days/times conflict with regularly scheduled events or meetings? Please comment. Thanks, Cindy H

Adaptive Services Training on 7/15

Tobey has scheduled a session for July 15 at 9-10:30 am. All research consultants and reference staff should come to this since they will be absorbing part of her job. In addition, those in training cohorts 3 and 4 who have not attended a session should come.

From Louise -

I propose (I will take care of) putting a copy of this in the basket where the Disabled help request forms are to remind us what we can do before we have a Student fill out a request form. Please send me the forms and I can assign.
